Mitochondria in Cells
Mitochondria release all of the energy for your body by generating ATP. They are little cellular power plants inside each cell.
When your cells need energy, the mitochondria bust ATP's apart releasing energy, then recycle the leftover pieces back into new ATP.
Mitochondria can make up to 5 million ATPs per second. The number of mitochondria in a cell vary widely by organism and tissue type.
Many cells have only a single mitochondrion, whereas others can contain several thousand mitochondria.
Mitochondria are composed of different regions.
- Outer Mitochondrial Membrane
- Inter Membrane Space
- Inner Mitochondrial Membrane
- Cristae
- Matrix
